THE CAVES MADE OF TUFO
The caves made of tufo are the sign of human’s adaptation to the Murgia’s territory. Houses, churces, buildings of the 19th century, Montescaglioso’s Abbey and Sassi, are the symbol of a long-lasting manual labor which has pull out pieces of limestone (tufi) from Murgia.
The caves of Contrada la Vaglia offer numerous signs of limestones’ extraction, pull out with strikes of pick , a procedure that has been used until the post-war period. Later, the pick’s procedure was substituted by the mechanized extraction with the employment of engine-driven hacksaws which flowed on platforms, making possible to realize perfectly parallel engravings.
